Official FAA learning statement

Recall risk management - identification / assessment / mitigation

What this means for your checkride

Risk management is the systematic process of identifying hazards, assessing the risk they present by likelihood and severity, and mitigating it to an acceptable level. Tools like the PAVE checklist (Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment, External pressures) and the 5P check structure the process before and during a flight.

Managing risk deliberately prevents accidents, so the FAA tests the identify-assess-mitigate process and its tools.

The common trap

Pilots treat risk as bad luck. Risk management is a repeatable process: list the hazards, judge likelihood and severity, and reduce or avoid them using tools like PAVE, rather than gut feel.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
