PLT547: Teaching Risk Management

What code PLT547 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Teaching Risk Management before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall teaching risk management - identification / assessment / mitigation

What this means for your checkride

Teaching risk management means training the student to identify hazards, assess the risk each poses, and mitigate it, as a habit rather than an afterthought. The instructor models it aloud, uses scenarios that force risk decisions, and gradually hands the student responsibility for the risk calls.

Instructors must produce pilots who manage risk, so the FAA tests how to teach identification, assessment, and mitigation.

The common trap

Instructors teach maneuvers and mention safety. Risk management is taught by making the student actively identify, assess, and mitigate hazards in realistic scenarios, then debriefing those decisions.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
