Recall Authentic Assessment

What this means for your checkride

Authentic assessment measures performance on a realistic, meaningful task rather than an isolated drill, often using a rubric or collaborative critique. In aviation, having the student manage a realistic scenario and then assessing the decisions and outcomes is authentic assessment, and it aligns testing with how the skill is actually used.

Assessing real-world performance predicts readiness better than isolated tasks, so the FAA tests the concept of authentic assessment.

The common trap

Instructors equate assessment with a written test. Authentic assessment judges performance on a realistic task, which better reflects whether the student can actually fly and decide.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
