Recall Voluntary Reporting Programs - ASAP / NASA

What this means for your checkride

The Aviation Safety Reporting System is a voluntary program under which pilots and others submit reports of safety concerns and their own errors. NASA receives and processes the reports so the data stays independent of the FAA, which encourages candid reporting. Timely filing of a report on an inadvertent, non-deliberate violation can provide limited protection from certain enforcement penalties.

Voluntary reporting surfaces hazards that would otherwise stay hidden, so the FAA tests the purpose of the program, NASA's role, and the limits of the protection it offers.

The common trap

The protection is limited: it does not cover accidents or deliberate or criminal acts, and the report must be filed within 10 days of the event to qualify.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
