What code PLT519 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Wing Spoilers before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall wing spoilers - purpose / operation

What this means for your checkride

Wing spoilers are panels that rise from the wing's upper surface to spoil (reduce) lift and add drag. They are used to descend or slow without gaining speed, to assist roll control on some aircraft, and after touchdown to kill lift so the wheels carry the weight for braking (ground spoilers).

Spoilers manage lift and drag in ways flaps cannot, so the FAA tests their purpose and operation.

The common trap

Pilots confuse spoilers with flaps. Flaps increase lift and drag for slow flight; spoilers reduce lift, which is why they help you descend or brake effectively on the ground.

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
