PLT490: Motivation and Insecurity

What code PLT490 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Motivation and Insecurity before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall teaching methods - motivation / student feelings of insecurity

What this means for your checkride

Motivation is the strongest force in learning. Positive motivation tied to the student's goals drives engagement, while fear, anxiety, and insecurity block it. The instructor sustains motivation with relevance, achievable goals, and genuine specific praise, and reduces insecurity by preparing the student and not overloading them.

Motivated, secure students learn far better, so the FAA tests how to maintain motivation and manage insecurity.

The common trap

Instructors think pressure motivates. Fear and insecurity shut down learning; students learn best when they feel safe, see the relevance, and experience steady, earned success.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
