PLT488: Lecture and Guided Discussion

What code PLT488 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Lecture and Guided Discussion before your checkride.

Updated September 2026 · Learning statement code · Pilot / Instructor

Official FAA learning statement

Recall teaching methods - group / guided discussion / lecture

What this means for your checkride

Teaching methods vary by goal. The lecture efficiently delivers information to any group size; the guided discussion draws knowledge out of students through instructor-led questioning, which deepens understanding; group and cooperative methods build problem-solving. The instructor picks the method to fit the objective and the students.

Choosing the right method affects how well students learn, so the FAA tests the lecture, guided discussion, and group methods and when each fits.

The common trap

Instructors default to lecturing. A guided discussion, where the instructor asks lead-off and follow-up questions, usually produces deeper learning than a one-way lecture.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
