PLT487: Demonstration-Performance Method

What code PLT487 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Demonstration-Performance Method before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall teaching methods - demonstration / performance

What this means for your checkride

The demonstration-performance method has the instructor explain and demonstrate a skill, then the student performs it with supervision and feedback until proficient. It suits a physical or procedural skill and follows the pattern of explanation, demonstration, student performance, and evaluation.

Most flight maneuvers are taught this way, so the FAA tests the steps of the demonstration-performance method.

The common trap

Instructors demonstrate and assume the student has it. The student must actually perform the skill, repeatedly and with feedback, before it is learned; watching is not doing.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
