PLT468: Basic VFR Weather Minimums

What code PLT468 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Basic VFR Weather Minimums before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall regulations - Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC)

What this means for your checkride

No person may operate an aircraft under VFR when the flight visibility is less, or at a distance from clouds that is less, than that prescribed for the corresponding altitude and class of airspace. The required visibility and cloud clearance values differ by airspace class and altitude, defining the minimum visual meteorological conditions for VFR flight.

Pilots must know the visibility and cloud clearance minimums required to operate under VFR in each class of airspace.

The common trap

VFR minimums are not a single value; they vary by airspace class and altitude.

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
