PLT464: Crew Safety Belts

What code PLT464 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Crew Safety Belts before your checkride.

Updated September 2026 · Learning statement code · Pilot / Instructor

Official FAA learning statement

Recall regulations - use of safety belts / harnesses (crew member)

What this means for your checkride

Under 91.105, during takeoff and landing and while en route, each required flight crewmember must keep the safety belt fastened while at their station, and the shoulder harness fastened during takeoff and landing unless they cannot perform their duties with it on. This keeps the crew secured and able to fly through turbulence and upsets.

Crew restraint is a safety-of-flight rule, so the FAA tests when crewmembers must wear belts and harnesses.

The common trap

Crew think the belt is only for takeoff and landing. A required crewmember keeps the belt fastened at their station en route too; the shoulder harness is the part limited to takeoff and landing, unless it prevents duties.

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
