Official FAA learning statement

Recall regulations - minimum flight / navigation instruments

What this means for your checkride

Part 91 lists the instruments and equipment that must be installed and operable for powered civil aircraft with standard airworthiness certificates. Separate lists apply for VFR flight during the day, VFR flight at night, and IFR flight, with the night and IFR lists adding items to the day VFR list.

Pilots must know the minimum instruments and equipment required for the intended type of operation before flight.

The common trap

The required equipment is not the same for all flights; night VFR and IFR require more than day VFR.

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
