PLT417: Flotation Devices

What code PLT417 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Flotation Devices before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall regulations - individual flotation devices

What this means for your checkride

For flights for hire beyond power-off gliding distance from shore, and for large or turbine aircraft operated over water, each occupant must have an approved flotation device readily available, plus at least one pyrotechnic signaling device. The requirement scales up with distance offshore and the type of operation.

Overwater survival equipment saves lives after a ditching, so the FAA tests when flotation and signaling devices are required.

The common trap

Pilots think any overwater flight needs life vests. The core requirement triggers for flights for hire beyond gliding distance from shore, with more required farther out and for larger operations.

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
