Official FAA learning statement

Recall regulations - flight instructor limitations / qualifications

What this means for your checkride

A flight instructor may not conduct more than 8 hours of flight training in any 24 consecutive hour period. To conduct flight training in an aircraft, the instructor generally must hold a flight instructor certificate and a pilot certificate with the applicable category and class ratings. There are also limitations on endorsements, so an instructor may only endorse a student for solo, cross-country, or a flight review after providing the required training and determining the person is prepared.

Flight instructor privileges are bounded by specific limits, and applicants must know the hour limit and the conditions required before giving endorsements.

The common trap

Holding a flight instructor certificate does not by itself authorize training in every aircraft; the instructor must hold the applicable category and class ratings.

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
