Recall regulations - definitions

What this means for your checkride

Part 1 provides the definitions used throughout the Federal Aviation Regulations. For example, a crewmember means a person assigned to perform duty in an aircraft during flight time, and a civil aircraft means an aircraft other than a public aircraft. Terms such as category and class are also defined here, with a category being a broad classification of aircraft when used for airman certification.

Many test questions turn on the precise regulatory meaning of a term, so pilots must apply the Part 1 definition rather than an everyday meaning.

The common trap

Everyday usage of a word may differ from its regulatory definition; the FAR meaning controls on the test.

Where to study it

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
