Recall regulations - communications enroute

What this means for your checkride

Under IFR in controlled airspace, unless otherwise authorized by ATC, the pilot in command must ensure a continuous watch is maintained on the appropriate frequency. The pilot must report as soon as possible the time and altitude passing each designated reporting point, any unforecast weather encountered, and any other information relating to the safety of flight.

Position and safety reports keep ATC aware of the flight when radar coverage is limited.

The common trap

Under radar control, only the reporting points ATC specifically requests need be reported, not every designated point.

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
