PLT363: VOR Test Facility

What code PLT363 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study VOR Test Facility before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall radio - VOR / VOT

What this means for your checkride

The VOT is a test facility used to check VOR receiver accuracy on the ground. Tune 108.0 MHz and center the CDI: the OBS should read 0 degrees with a FROM indication, or 180 degrees with a TO indication. This confirms the receiver is within tolerance before use.

Pilots must know how to verify VOR accuracy so navigation is reliable for IFR operations.

The common trap

On a VOT check the aircraft position does not matter; the indication is 0 FROM or 180 TO regardless of where the aircraft is parked.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
