PLT357: Instrument Landing System

What code PLT357 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Instrument Landing System before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall radio - ILS

What this means for your checkride

The ILS provides precision approach guidance using a localizer for lateral (course) alignment and a glide slope for vertical guidance to the runway. Marker beacons, including the outer marker, identify points along the approach. Together these give the pilot a precise path down to the decision altitude.

The ILS is the primary precision approach aid, so pilots must know each component and what it provides.

The common trap

The localizer gives only lateral guidance and the glide slope only vertical; students sometimes expect one to supply both.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
