What this means for your checkride

Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) give time-critical changes to the system: closed runways, out-of-service navaids, obstructions, temporary flight restrictions, and airspace changes. Reviewing the relevant NOTAMs is a required part of preflight action for any flight.

A missed NOTAM can send you to a closed runway or into a TFR, so the FAA tests the classes of NOTAMs and the duty to check them.

The common trap

Pilots skim NOTAMs as boilerplate. A single NOTAM can close your destination or establish a TFR along your route, so they are a required, not optional, part of preflight planning.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
