PLT270: Human Needs and Adult Learning

What code PLT270 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Human Needs and Adult Learning before your checkride.

Updated September 2026 · Learning statement code · Pilot / Instructor

Official FAA learning statement

Recall human behavior - personality / human needs / adult learning

What this means for your checkride

Learning is shaped by human needs and how adults learn. Maslow's hierarchy shows that basic needs, safety, and self-esteem must be met before a student can focus on learning; adults learn best when the material is relevant, respects their experience, and is applied to real goals.

Understanding motivation and adult learning helps instructors teach effectively, so the FAA tests human needs and the principles of how adults learn.

The common trap

Instructors treat all students the same. A frightened or insecure student cannot learn well until the instructor first addresses the need for safety and self-esteem.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
