Official FAA learning statement

Recall FOI techniques - professionalism

What this means for your checkride

Professionalism for an instructor means competence, a sincere interest in the student, proper conduct and appearance, and continued self-improvement. The instructor sets the example: the safety attitudes, thoroughness, and honesty the student absorbs along with the flying skills.

The instructor's professionalism shapes the safety culture a new pilot adopts, so the FAA tests the elements of professional conduct.

The common trap

Instructors think skill alone makes a professional. Attitude, ethics, and the example set matter as much; students copy the instructor's habits, good and bad.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
