PLT222: Takeoff Procedures

What code PLT222 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Takeoff Procedures before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall flight operations - takeoff procedures

What this means for your checkride

A normal takeoff begins with the takeoff roll to build airspeed, followed by rotation and liftoff at the appropriate speed. Flaps are set as recommended for the conditions, and the pilot maintains directional control down the centerline throughout the roll. Once airborne the airplane is transitioned to the climb attitude and speed.

Pilots must sequence takeoff actions correctly and use proper rotation speed to depart safely.

The common trap

Students sometimes try to pull the airplane off the ground before it has flying speed, which can result in a poor climb or settling back down.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
