PLT221: Takeoff And Landing Maneuvers

What code PLT221 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Takeoff And Landing Maneuvers before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Recall flight operations - takeoff / landing maneuvers

What this means for your checkride

Takeoff and landing maneuvers cover normal and crosswind operations from the takeoff roll and liftoff through the approach and touchdown. In a crosswind takeoff the pilot uses aileron into the wind and rudder to track the centerline. Each maneuver has its own configuration and technique that the pilot must fly accurately.

These are the most safety critical phases of every flight, so the FAA verifies the pilot understands correct technique.

The common trap

Students often forget to hold aileron into the wind during the crosswind takeoff roll, which lets the upwind wing rise.

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
