PLT219: Ground Reference Maneuvers
What code PLT219 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Ground Reference Maneuvers before your checkride.
Recall flight operations - maneuvers
What this means for your checkride
Ground reference maneuvers train the pilot to fly a precise path over the ground while correcting for wind. Because wind pushes the aircraft off course, the pilot must vary bank angle and crab angle to hold the intended track. These maneuvers build the division of attention and wind correction skills used in the traffic pattern.
The FAA tests these because wind drift correction is a foundational skill for safe pattern work and landings.
Students often try to hold a constant bank angle throughout, but a constant ground track in wind requires the bank to change continuously.
Where to study it
A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
