PLT177: Balloon Flight Operations
What code PLT177 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Balloon Flight Operations before your checkride.
Recall balloon - flight operations
What this means for your checkride
Level flight, or equilibrium, is the baseline maneuver for a hot air balloon and is reached when lift exactly matches weight so the balloon neither ascends nor descends. Because the envelope constantly loses heat, the pilot maintains altitude with periodic standard burns to hold that equilibrium temperature. Every altitude has its own equilibrium temperature, so climbing or descending is a matter of managing the heat added relative to that balance.
Holding equilibrium with well timed burns is the core skill from which all other balloon maneuvers are built.
A balloon left alone does not simply hold altitude. A hot air balloon cools and descends unless the pilot keeps replacing lost heat.
Where to study it
A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
