What code PLT172 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study ATC System and Services before your checkride.

Recall ATC - system / services

What this means for your checkride

The ATC system provides separation and services: clearances and separation in controlled airspace, radar traffic advisories and flight following for VFR aircraft on request, and safety alerts. What you get depends on the airspace, controller workload, and radar coverage.

Knowing what ATC can and will provide shapes how you use the system, so the FAA tests the services available and how to request them.

The common trap

Pilots think VFR flight following guarantees separation. It gives traffic advisories as workload permits; you remain responsible for see-and-avoid and for staying clear of clouds and airspace.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
