PLT142: Noise Abatement

What code PLT142 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Noise Abatement before your checkride.

Updated September 2026 · Learning statement code · Pilot / Instructor

Official FAA learning statement

Recall airport operations - noise avoidance routes

What this means for your checkride

Noise abatement procedures reduce the noise footprint over communities near airports: preferred runways, published departure and arrival routes, and altitude or power profiles. They are usually voluntary but expected, and they never take priority over safety.

Being a good neighbor is part of airport operations, so the FAA tests awareness of noise abatement procedures and where to find them.

The common trap

Pilots follow a noise procedure even when it conflicts with safety. Noise abatement is always secondary to safe operation; you deviate whenever safety requires it.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
