Interpret VOR - charts / indications / CDI / NAV

What this means for your checkride

A VOR tells you your bearing to or from a ground station. You read it from the course deviation indicator and the TO/FROM flag: center the needle, note TO or FROM, and the OBS setting is the radial or course you are on or tracking.

VOR interpretation, especially the TO/FROM logic and needle sensing, is a classic test area, so the FAA checks that you can turn an indication into a position and a correction.

The common trap

The trap is reverse sensing: fly toward a course set roughly opposite your heading and the needle moves backward from the correction you actually need.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
