PLT041: Altimeter

What code PLT041 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Altimeter before your checkride.

Official FAA learning statement

Interpret altimeter - readings / settings

What this means for your checkride

The altimeter shows height by sensing static pressure against the reference you set in the Kollsman window. Reading it means combining the hands with the current altimeter setting, and knowing which altitude you are working with: indicated, pressure, density, or true.

Setting and reading the altimeter correctly is fundamental to terrain and traffic separation, so the FAA tests both the mechanics and the altitude definitions.

The common trap

Pilots forget that a low setting or cold temperature makes the altimeter read higher than you truly are. The saying is: from high to low, look out below.

Before your checkride (14 CFR 61.39)

A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
