PLT028: Crewmember, Defined
What code PLT028 covers, why the FAA tests it, and how to study Crewmember, Defined before your checkride.
Define crewmember
What this means for your checkride
A crewmember is a person assigned to duty in an aircraft during flight time. The regulations further distinguish a flight crewmember, such as a pilot, flight engineer, or flight navigator assigned to duty during flight time, from other crewmembers such as flight attendants.
Many operating rules, duty limits, and equipment requirements hinge on who is a crewmember versus a passenger, so the FAA tests the definition.
A crewmember is not the same as a flight crewmember; a flight attendant is a crewmember but not a flight crewmember, and the applicable rule often specifies which one it means.
Where to study it
A code on your test report is an area of deficiency. An authorized instructor must review it with you and endorse that review before you take the practical test, and the examiner may revisit it during the oral. Study it until you can explain it out loud, not just recognize the answer.
